The COLTs Really ARE At The Super Bowl!

The COLTs Really ARE At The Super Bowl!
Although you won't notice it on TV while watching the Super Bowl, mobile wireless technology has played a huge role in the logistical setup at Detroit's Ford Field, including the creation of a WiFi network in the stadium to serve journalists as well as enhancing security at the facility.

Motorola, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint Nextel have brought along trucks furnished with mobile wireless equipment to enhance network coverage at these types of events. These cells on light trucks or COLTs (take that, Peyton Manning!) will play a key role in setting up a wireless network for the on-site pressrooms along with making coverage available for all of the mobile equipment (cellphones, two-way radios, etc.) that will be used by people working at the game and fans.

WiFi antennas have been placed throughout the stadium, so you can bet the wireless networks will be buzzing as the game takes place.

Motorola to buy BenQ research and design facility

Motorola to buy BenQ research and design facility
Perhaps red-hot Motorola needs some good ole' Taiwanese (or German) engineering for a new uber-RAZR? Motorola has said that it will be buying a research and design facility from BenQ (the artist formerly known as Prince Siemens) for an undisclosed sum. The Denmark-based R&D center will focus on phone software and antenna design, among other things.

So, with this new center, Motorola -- please, please -- get up to par with the dingy and dull user interface found on most of your wireless handsets and find a nice balance between looking good and user-friendliness. I'll say this -- the Sony Ericsson interface, introduced over two years ago, is as darn pretty and entertaining as it is user-friendly. Take a cue, Motorola.

Google's San Francisco WiFi plans starting to raise eyebrows

Google's San Francisco WiFi plans starting to raise eyebrows
Our friends over at the unofficial Google weblog have mentioned that Google's plans to team up with Earthlink and provide San Francisco a citywide WiFi wireless internet network are, of course, running into some concerns. Most of the concerns center around the quantity of public input that will be provided into the buildout process

Privacy seems to be at the forefront of many new areas Google attempts to enter these days -- and rightly so. They've gained much power in a short period of time and the folks who use its services -- including possible cheap or free wireless internet -- want to make sure Google sticks to their credo of "do no evil".

Britney's Baby Shopping

Britney's Baby Shopping
Since we all now know that Britney Spears is pregnant again, it's no surprise to see that she's out buying some new baby things. At least, she's browsing for baby things because she doesn't yet know the gender of the baby. She headed out to Petit Tresor in Los Angeles to look at their elegant and adorable line of baby furniture. Britney's hoping for a girl, so you can be sure that she had her eyes on some of the frilly, girly designs in the boutique. For now, though, she kept her son, Sean Preston under wraps in a Carezza Minifur Blanket. The blanket is made of soft Italian yarn, in blue or pink, with sabbia suede on one side. Price: $149.

Vista on a MacBook Pro?

Vista on a MacBook Pro?

That crazy cat Marc Orchant (some of you may recognize that name) has gone and installed Windows Vista on a friend's MacBook Pro. Well, he hasn't yet fully installed it, but he got far enough to get the swanky screenshot you see here. Tomorrow they plan to go all the way. I thought this wasn't supposed to be possible. But hey, I'm not arguing!
